Dear Dan Conaway.
I am seeking representation for my comedic, rock-n-roll parody memoir, Lying Flatt.
—------Insert agent and their work here—------
The subjects covered in my book are punk rock as hell (or so I've been told) It covers ever topics such as, fatphobia, coming of age as a queer person in a small town, painful isolation, fame, and how being yourself whether on stage or at home, was and is necessary, and brave and this story is a testament to that. Lester Flatt as a young, sharp-tongued, undiagnosed autistic, screwed-up, frontman of his rock band, Bad Decisions, he's an unreliable, pathological liar and overly earnest aspiring rock star in the rough, unforgiving 1980s, my book delves into some unique corners of the underground, like jersey cheesy one hit wonder hair metal scene, and NYC punks, taking tours through iconic structure landmarks, like CBGBS, Trash and Vaudeville, the limelight, the importance of archiving queer music history.
Lester’s voice is likable, funny, shocking, morally conflicting and a uniquely brash, goofy, teenage force of nature that your readers, from young disabled queers to gen x, to die-hard rock readers, are all bound to along for the ride
Because I’m sure you’ve heard…Being gay is the most rock ‘n’ roll thing there is!
Lying Flatt is about a wild Seventeen-year-old named Lester Flatt who is on a mission to become a rock god in the late '80s, but he faces a world that doesn't always welcome someone like him on stage. Struggling with his identity as a gay aspiring musician, Lester navigates the challenges of jealousy, love, and self-acceptance while fronting his new band, Bad Decisions. As he grapples with his feelings for his hair metal rival, Rubin Smith, who surprisingly shares his secret, Lester embarks on an emotional journey of romance, rivalry, and Rock n Roll. Caught between the allure of fame and the need for genuine connection, he experiences a tumultuous relationship with Rubin Smith, a popular musician whose band rivals his own. Lester’s bandmates find happiness in their relationships, he feels increasingly isolated and pressured to conform to societal expectations. With the support of his brother Kevin and the punk scene of New York City, Lester begins to explore his identity further, crafting an alter ego, Mack Lasher, that embodies his wildest rock ‘n’ roll dreams. But as the Battle of the Bands approaches, Lester must confront his insecurities, self-hate, past trauma, and the lies he’s been telling himself. With the weight of his aspirations and the fear of rejection looming large, he must decide whether to embrace his authentic self or continue living a façade. Will Lester rise to the challenge, prove his worth, and find love with Rubin, or will his self-doubt and external pressures extinguish his dreams of rock stardom forever?
Lying Flatt is a poignant tale of self-discovery, love, a love letter to rock n roll in all its shades, tying it clearly to modern readers' taste for music, adventure, and real love for who you truly are, in this quest for acceptance in a world that often feels unforgiving. In a love letter to rock n roll, exposing the lack of exposure, on the trauma that can lead people to need to alter egos and the fame the music industry falsely, promises, like moths to a flame.
Lying Flatt, Lesters the first parody rock n roll memoir in his trilogy of books. This novel comes in at , 221557, Words. LYING FLATT will appeal to readers of Ziggy Stardust and Me by James Brandon, Last Night at the Telegraph club, by Malinda Lo Burry your gays, by Chuck Tingle, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and Flight, by Sherman Alexie, and Lords of Chaos by Michael Moynihan, Didrik Soderlind. Lying Flatt is also fully illustrated with my own original artwork,
Although my book is focused on the music world, I have no musical talent myself.
My Name is Elijah Brahmi, I am a gay autistic trans male junior at SUNY New Paltz, living in upstate NY and in New York City. I make my living doing freelance writing, as well as doing cartoons for the school newspaper, the Oracle, and working towards a BA in Creative Writing. I have had short pieces published in the CCNY Promethean literary magazine and in the Writopia Ellipsis. I’ve been writing Lying Flatt for four years straight. This story writing it got me through the hardest period of my teenage years, so just like all the books I read that saved my life, I wrote this book for struggling, queer kids like me with the Don't say gay bill criminalizing gay representation and taking gay books out of libraries, meaningful heartfelt queer rep, in libraries is more important than ever.
This book is for all the kids no one else writes books for, in the 80s or now, its for all the outcasts stuck in conservative schools right now, who have no queer community and just need something to convince them being you is worth being, and everyone is not better off with them gone. Because sometimes you need to hear it, whether from that one friend or within the pages of a book they're no longer allowed to read. They need real stories that will fix everything but will get them through the toughest times. When I had no one books got me through showing people like me with the same struggles, really could have happiness and love too. They got me to believe life, MY life, all our lives, is worth fighting for..
I hope my book can do the same.
Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to your thoughts.
Yours sincerely,
Elijah Brahmi (aka Buddy Devine)
